Resident Mare Program

Since 2008 a Resident Mare Program has been in place in Ontario in order for their produce to participate in the province’s lucrative Thoroughbred Improvement Program. In order to start this process Breeders must review the criteria to qualify as a resident mare in advance of foaling. A mare must meet at least one of the criteria, as set by the Program Administrator, to qualify and are as follows:

  • resident in the Province of Ontario by December st in the year of conception and remained in Ontario until foaling or,
  • resident in the Province of Ontario for 60 consecutive days surrounding the date of foaling in Ontario or,
  • bred back to an Ontario Sire registered with the Program in the year of conception or,
  • purchased or RNA at an Ontario Racing recognized sale or auction and arrive within the boundaries of Ontario no later than (30) days after the date of purchase or RNA or,
  • the mare was purchased in a bona-fide private sale, arrives in Ontario within thirty (30) days of the date of transaction and remains in Ontario until foaling.

When registering your foal as a Canadian Bred with the CTHS we suggest you include a completed Ontario Mare Declaration Form in order to start the process of qualifying the mare as a resident and to start the process of qualifying her foal as a Registered Ontario-Bred.
