2019 National Annual Statistical Review

In keeping with the CTHS’ goal to keep our membership informed we are pleased to publish our inaugural issue of the CTHS Annual Statistical Review for 2019. Included in this issue are the various leader listings our industry is accustomed to.
One highlight for 2019 includes that fact that our membership numbers seem to have levelled off over the past 3 years so have our foal crop numbers. This is quite an achievement when the overall decline in crop numbers for 2019, as reported by the Jockey Club Fact Book (May 1, 2020), was 3.3% in North America and in 2019 Canada is showing a 1.3% increase.
With the unfortunate necessity to cancel all the Provincial Awards Ceremonies across the country we would like to take a moment to acknowledge a few achievements of our members and their horses:

Thank you for taking the time to participate in the post-pandemic horse racing economic impact study. Your input, through this survey, will help ensure that the study captures a diverse range of data that accurately reflects the industry’s economic footprint. This initiative will help us assess how the horse racing landscape has changed since 2019. The more horse owners, breeders and trainers that participate, the more representative the data will be in estimating the sector’s contribution to Ontario’s economy.
2023 December 31 - After serving twenty-three years on the CTHS Ontario Board of Directors, Peter Berringer the current President has elected to step down from the Board. “After considerable thought and with great mixed feelings, I feel it is now best for me to move on, allowing a new vision to guide and represent the Breeders of Ontario. I have other opportunities I wish to pursue and spend more time with family while dedicating more time to my training business and enjoying my farm”, stated Peter in his letter to the Board.

TORONTO - December 2nd - Shamans Girl made an impressive first impression in the $150,000 Shady Well Stakes, on Saturday at Woodbine.The Harold Ladouceur trainee, supplemented to the six-furlong race for Ontario-bred or Ontario-sired 2-year-old fillies, sat last of six early as even-money choice Onella grabbed the lead shortly after the break and found herself one length ahead of her closest pursuer, Master Aragorn, through an opening quarter clocked in a brisk :22.27.Onella, an impressive winner in her career bow on October 14, continued to show the way through a half in :45.70, while Ryan Munger, aboard Shamans Girl, remained unhurried at the back of the pack.Swinging off the turn for home, Onella was confronted by the duo of Vandoo and Little Teddy, while Shamans Girl began to roll to the outside and hit her best stride mid-way down the lane.The daughter of Shaman Ghost-Ginger Brew wore down her rivals in late stretch and went on to notch a 3 ½-length triumph in 1:11.63. Vandoo finished a half-length ahead of Little Teddy for second. Red Eleanor, Onella, and Master Aragorn completed the order of finish.
