Mare Recruitment Program (MRP)
The Mare Recruitment Program was launched in 2020 by Ontario Racing whereby mare owners who bring an in-foal mare into the province of Ontario will be eligible to receive $5,000 through the Thoroughbred Improvement Program (TIP) for each mare.
This program provides a significant opportunity for both new and long-time breeders to continue to invest in breeding Thoroughbreds in Ontario.
The Mare Recruitment Program alternates each year with the Live Foal Program
The Mare Recruitment Program will return for the 2024 foaling season.
2022 Program Highlights:
The in-foal mare must not have foaled in Ontario in 2020 or 2021 and the mare must meet the mare residency criteria as outlined in the applicable criteria book.
For mares purchased at an Ontario Racing accredited sale in 2021, the mare must have a minimum hammer price of $5,000 USD.
The program will be capped at 5 in-foal mares per individual and/or entity.
Mares who have foaled in Ontario in the previous 2 years will be eligible if purchased (RNA’s not considered) at one of the Ontario Racing recognized public auctions.
There is an added $2,500 CAD incentive for every mare bred back to a REGISTERED ONTARIO SIRE in the 2022 breeding season, paid upon declaration of live foal with the Jockey Club.
The total funding available for this program is $300,000 CDN and will be paid out on a “first come, first served” basis.
