Mare Purchase Program (MPP)

A Mare Purchase Program is in place in Ontario to assist in the expansion and quality of the resident Broodmares in Ontario with the goal to increase the racehorse population.

The program, administered by Ontario Racing, provides significant financial support to Ontario Resident Breeders investing in “New” Broodmares that will be brought to Ontario to foal with an added incentive if the Broodmare is “Bred Back” to a Registered Ontario Sire.

Program Highlights:

  • The MPP applies to in-foal mares purchased (RNA’s not considered) at one of the Ontario Racing recognized public auctions. Click here for the complete list of auctions.

  • Purchasers receive 50% of the purchase price to a maximum of $25,000 CAD. In-foal mares must be purchased for a minimum purchase price of $10,000 USD with NO maximum. There is a capped maximum distribution of $75,000 CAD to any one individual, partnership, corporation or other ownership group.

  • There is an added $2,500 CAD incentive for every mare bred back to a REGISTERED ONTARIO SIRE in the breeding season after the purchased mare foals, paid upon declaration of live foal with the Jockey Club.

  • The total funding for this program is $800,000 CAD and will be paid on a “first come, first served basis”.

  • To be eligible to receive funds through this program, the individual, partnership, corporation or other ownership group must be an ONTARIO RESIDENT.

  • Mares must meet the Mare Residency Program criteria as outlined in the applicable criteria book published by Ontario Racing.
